About Tony Blair

  • Anthony Charles Lynton Blair (born 6 May 1953) is a British politician who served as prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2007 and leader of the Labour Party from 1994 to 2007. Born in Edinburgh, Blair's father was a barrister and academic.
  • After attending the private Fettes College, Blair studied law at St John's College, Oxford.
  • Graduating in 1975, he subsequently practised as a barrister.
  • Blair became involved in Labour politics and, in 1983, he was elected member of Parliament for Sedgefield.
  • Associated with Labour's "soft left", he became a proponent of the party's movement to the centre of British politics (it had been out of government since 1979).
  • He was appointed to the party's frontbench in 1988 and became Shadow Home Secretary in 1992.
  • Blair became leader of the Opposition on his election as Labour Party leader in 1994, following the sudden death of his predecessor, John Smith.
