About Edgar von Gierke
- Edgar Otto Conrad von Gierke (9 February 1877, Breslau – 21 October 1945, Karlsruhe) was a German doctor who specialised in glycogenesis.
- This research led him to the discovery of glycogen synthesis type I in 1929. He received his medical doctorate at Heidelberg University in 1901, and several years later became a prosector at the municipal hospital in Karlsruhe.
- In 1911 he was named an associate professor of bacteriology at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe.He married Julie Braun in 1912 and fathered four children.
- Glycogen storage disease type I is named for him, commonly known as Von Gierke disease.
