About Jacoby Ellsbury

  • Jacoby McCabe Ellsbury ( j?-KOH-bee; born September 11, 1983) is an American professional baseball center fielder who is a free agent.
  • He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Boston Red Sox from 2007 through 2013 and then played for the New York Yankees from 2014 to 2017.
  • An enrolled member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes, Ellsbury is the first American Indian of Navajo descent to play Major League Baseball. Ellsbury was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 23rd round of the 2002 MLB draft, but did not sign.
  • After having played college baseball for three years at Oregon State University, he was selected by the Red Sox as the 23rd overall pick in the 2005 draft.
  • He made his major league debut for the Red Sox in 2007.
  • In 2011, Ellsbury was named American League Comeback Player of the Year, was named to the American League All-Star team, won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger Award, became the first Red Sox player in history to be a member of the 30–30 club, and was the runner-up to Justin Verlander for the American League Most Valuable Player Award.
