- Berry was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, but raised in Burnaby, British Columbia.
- He played college hockey for the University of Denver, where he was an all-WCHA first team selection in 1977-78. He played for the Colorado Rockies for 2 seasons.
- He played in 121 games and scored 10 goals and 33 assists for 43 points.
- He is the brother of the former professional hockey player Ken Berry.
