About Jozias van Aartsen

  • Jozias Johannes van Aartsen (Dutch pronunciation: ['jo?zij?s jo?'??n?s f?n 'a?rts?(n)]; born 25 December 1947) is a retired Dutch politician of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and political consultant. Van Aartsen attended the Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet in The Hague from April 1960 until May 1968 and applied at the Free University Amsterdam in June 1968 majoring in Law and obtaining an Bachelor of Laws degree in July 1970.
  • Van Aartsen worked as a political consultant for the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy from July 1970 until August 1974 and as the director of the Telders Foundation think tank from August 1974 until February 1979.
  • Van Aartsen worked as a civil servant for the Ministry of the Interior from February 1979 until August 1994 as Deputy Director-General of the department for Administrative Affairs from February 1979 until April 1981 and as Director-General of the department for Administrative Affairs from April 1981 until July 1983 and as Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of the Interior from July 1983 until January 1985 and as Secretary-General of the Ministry of the Interior from January 1985 until August 1994. After the election of 1994 Van Aartsen was appointed as Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Fisheries in the Cabinet Kok I, taking office on 22 August 1994.
  • Van Aartsen was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives after the election of 1998, taking office on 19 May 1998.
  • Following the cabinet formation of 1998 Van Aartsen was appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet Kok II, taking office on 3 August 1998.
  • The Cabinet Kok II resigned on 16 April 2002 following the conclusions of the NIOD report into the Srebrenica massacre during the Bosnian War and continued to serve in a demissionary capacity.
  • After the election of 2002 Van Aartsen returned as a Member of the House of Representatives, taking office on 23 May 2002.
  • Following the cabinet formation of 2002 Van Aartsen was not giving a cabinet post in the new cabinet, the Cabinet Kok II was replaced by the Cabinet Balkenende I on 22 July 2002 and he continued to serve in the House of Representatives as a frontbencher and the de facto Whip and spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and the Benelux Union.
  • After the election of 2003 the Leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy and Parliamentary leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy in the House of Representatives Gerrit Zalm was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in the Cabinet Balkenende II, Van Aartsen announced his candidacy to succeed him as Parliamentary leader, Van Aartsen won defeating incumbent Minister of Defence Henk Kamp and fellow frontbencher Frank de Grave and became the Parliamentary leader, taking office on 27 May 2003.
  • On 27 November 2004 Zalm and the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy leadership announced that Zalm was stepping down as Leader in favor of Van Aartsen.
  • On 8 March 2006 Van Aartsen announced he was stepping down as Leader and Parliamentary leader taking responsibility for the defeat in the municipal elections of 2006 but continued to serve in the House of Representatives as a frontbencher chairing the parliamentary committee for Foreign Affairs.
  • In August 2006 Van Aartsen announced that he wouldn't stand for the election of 2006 and he continued to serve until the end of the parliamentary term on 30 November 2006.Van Aartsen remained in active in national politics, in December 2006 he was appointed as Director-General of the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport and Energy of the European Commission in Brussels, taking office on 1 January 2007.
  • In February 2008 he was nominated as Mayor of The Hague, he resigned as Director-General the same day he was installed as installed as Mayor, serving from 27 March 2008 until 1 March 2017.
  • Van Aartsen also became active in the public sector and occupied numerous seats as a nonprofit director on several boards of directors and supervisory boards (The Hague Institute for Global Justice, The National Theater, European Cultural Foundation, The Hague Art Circle, Haagsche Courant and the Institute for Multiparty Democracy).
  • In April 2017 Van Aartsen was appointed as acting King's Commissioner of Drenthe following the resignation of Jacques Tichelaar, serving from 19 April 2017 until 1 December 2017.
  • In December 2017 Van Aartsen was appointed as acting Mayor of Amsterdam following the death of Eberhard van der Laan, serving from 4 December 2017 until 12 July 2018. Van Aartsen retired from national politics but remained active in the public sector and continues to occupy numerous seats as a nonprofit director on several boards of directors and supervisory boards and served on several state commissions and councils on behalf of the government (Advisory Council for Foreign Affairs). Van Aartsen is known for his abilities as a manager and debater.
  • Van Aartsen continues to comment on political affairs as of 2019 and holds the distinction as the only person that served as both Mayor of The Hague and Mayor of Amsterdam.
  • His father Jan was also a politician who served as Minister of Transport and Water Management and Minister of Housing and Construction.
