About Henry A. Coffeen

  • Henry Asa Coffeen (February 14, 1841 – December 9, 1912) was a United States Representative from Wyoming. Born near Gallipolis, Ohio, he moved with his parents to Indiana and thence to Homer, Illinois in 1853.
  • He attended the country schools and was graduated from the scientific department of Abingdon College.
  • He engaged in teaching and was a member of the faculty of Hiram College in Ohio.
  • He moved to Sheridan, Wyoming in 1884; he was a delegate from Wyoming to the World's Fair Congress of Bankers and Financiers at Chicago in June 1893 and was a member of the constitutional convention that framed the constitution of the new State of Wyoming in 1889. Coffeen was elected as a member of the Democratic party to the Fifty-third Congress, serving from March 4, 1893 to March 3, 1895; he was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1894 to the Fifty-fourth Congress.
  • He engaged in literary pursuits until his death in Sheridan in 1912; interment was in Sheridan Cemetery.
