- According to Icelandic sagas, he was born in the Jæren district of Rogaland, Norway, as the son of Thorvald Asvaldsson.
- He therefore also appears, patronymically, as Erik Thorvaldsson.
- The appellation "the Red" most likely refers to the color of his hair and beard.
