About Joaquim Marques Lisboa, Marquis of Tamandaré

  • Joaquim Marques Lisboa, Marquês de Tamandaré (Rio Grande, December 13, 1807 – Rio de Janeiro, March 20, 1897), was a Brazilian Imperial Navy officer who reached the rank of Admiral.
  • His entire life was dedicated to the Brazilian Navy, including a life-long membership in the Military and Justice Council, then Supreme Military Court, from its creation until 1891, when the Republican Government granted him the requested exemption.
  • As national hero, he's the Brazilian Navy's Patron.
  • On December 13th, his birthday, was instituted Sailor's Day (September 4th, 1925) by the Navy's Minister, Admiral Alexandrino Faria de Alencar.
  • He participated in the Brazilian Independence War, Cisplatine's War, the Ecuador Confederation.
  • Tamandaré is also responsible for repressing revolts occurred during the Regulative Period: Cabanagem, Sabinada, Farroupilha, Balaiada and Praieira.
  • On the external scope, he participated in the War for Plata River and, within the outbreak of Paraguayan War, commanded naval operations in Rio de la Plata basin, supporting Battle of Passo da Pátria, the Battle of Curuzu and the Battle of Curupaiti.
  • His memory still raises passions among the Navy's military in current time, besides being also studied by civilians.
