About Justus van Maurik

  • Justus van Maurik (16 August 1846, in Amsterdam – 18 November 1904), or Justus van Maurik Jr., was a Dutch author and cigar maker.
  • He was the grandson of the similarly named Justus van Maurik Sr.. Justus was first known as a writer of farces and humorous plays.
  • In 1878, his first novel, Mie de porster appeared.
  • Hundreds of stories followed.
  • Many of his books were illustrated by the graphic artist Johan Braakensiek. Maurik was one of the editors who, in 1877, created De Amsterdammer, a newspaper for specializing in trade, industry and art, which is now the weekly De Groene Amsterdammer.
