About Henry Bachtold

  • Henry Bachtold DSO MC (22 August 1891 – 9 May 1983) was an Australian soldier and railway engineer.
  • He fought during World War I as an engineer with the 1st Field Company at the Gallipoli Campaign, where he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Military Cross.
  • He commanded the 14th Field Company at the Battle of Polygon Wood, for which he was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order.
  • Bachtold commanded the engineers of the 5th Australian Division in 1917–18 and the engineers of the 3rd Australian Division in 1918.
  • He was mentioned in dispatches four times during World War I and ended the war as a lieutenant colonel.
  • During 1942 and 1943, Bachtold was the Chief Engineer of II Corps, after which he was placed in reserve with the honorary rank of brigadier.
  • Bachtold retired from the Department of Railways New South Wales in 1962 and died on 9 May 1983.
