About Mikito Takayasu

  • Mikito Takayasu (?? ??, Takayasu Mikito, September 4, 1860 – November 20, 1938) was a Japanese ophthalmologist known for his discovery of Takayasu's arteritis.The first case of Takayasu’s arteritis was described in 1908 by Dr.
  • Takayasu at the Annual Meeting of the Japan Ophthalmology Society.
  • Takayasu described a peculiar "wreathlike" appearance of the blood vessels in the back of the eye (retina).
  • Two Japanese physicians at the same meeting (Drs.
  • Onishi and Kagoshima) reported similar eye findings in individuals whose wrist pulses were absent.Graduating from Tokyo Imperial University in 1887, Takayasu worked at what was to become Kanazawa University School of Medicine in Kanazawa, Ishikawa.
  • After moving to Beppu, Kyushu, he died in November 1938.
