Hidalgo (born December 22, 1979) is a Chilean physicist, author, and entrepreneur.
He holds an ANITI Chair at the University of Toulouse, an Honorary Professorship at the University of Manchester, and is a visiting Professor at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Hidalgo is also a founder of Datawheel, a data visualization and distribution company.
Prior to joining the University of Toulouse, Hidalgo was a professor at MIT where he directed the Collective Learning group.
Hidalgo pioneered the field of Economic Complexity and has created several data visualization platforms, including DataUSA, DataViva, DataChile, DataAfrica, and Pantheon.
He is the author of dozens of academic papers in complex systems, networks, and economic development, and has created applications of data science and artificial intelligence.
He is the author of Why Information Grows and a co-author of The Atlas of Economic Complexity.
His work has been honored in 2018 with the Lagrange Prize, in 2019 with the Centennial Medal from the University of Concepcion, and in 2011 with the Bicentennial Medial from the Chilean Congress in 2011.
Awards for his data visualization and distribution platforms include three Webbys, one Information is Beautiful award, and one Indigo Design Award.
