She was appointed by the President on 1 December 2017.She studied a BA in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics in University College Dublin.
She was also educated at the College of Europe, Bruges and the Law Society of Ireland.
She was admitted as a Solicitor in 1973, called to the Bar in 1980 and became a Senior Counsel in 1988.
She was appointed to the High Court in 2002 and she was assigned to the Commercial list in 2004.
She was in charge of the Examiners Court list and The Hague Convention on Child Abduction list.She served as chairperson of the Referendum Commission for the 31st Amendment of the Constitution of Ireland.
Finlay Geoghegan retired as a judge on 16 June 2019.She is a member of a legal family, her father, Thomas Finlay was Chief Justice of Ireland and a Judge of the Supreme Court.
Her grandfather Thomas Finlay and uncle William Finlay both served as Governor of the Bank of Ireland.
Both her brothers were Senior Counsel.
Her uncle John Blayney was a Judge of the Supreme Court.
She married Hugh Geoghegan, who was also a Judge of the High Court and later a Judge of the Supreme Court, who was himself the son of a Supreme Court Judge James Geoghegan.
Finlay Geoghegan and Geoghegan have three children.
Her son James Geoghegan is a Fine Gael councillor.
