About George Eaton Sutherland

  • George Eaton Sutherland (September 14, 1843 – September 13, 1899) was an American politician, lawyer, and jurist. Born in Burlington, New York, Sutherland served in the 1st New York Artillery Regiment during the American Civil War.
  • Sutherland went to Ripon College and then graduated from Amherst College in 1870.
  • He received his law in 1871 from Columbia Law School.
  • He was admitted to the Wisconsin bar in 1871 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
  • He also married Adela Merrell (1848–1898) in 1871.
  • Sutherland served as Ripon, Wisconsin city attorney in 1872.
  • In 1874, he moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
  • Sutherland served in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1880 and 1881 and was a Republican.
  • He also served as postmaster for Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
  • In 1886, Sutherland moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and continued to practice law.
  • In 1897, he was elected Milwaukee Superior Court judge.
  • Sutherland died suddenly of heart disease in Chicago, Illinois while coming home from a foreign trip.
