  • He taught until 2011 as Carolina Distinguished Professor of Classics and Louise Fry Scudder Professor of Humanities at the University of South Carolina. Briggs studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he wrote his M.A.
  • thesis on Horace and his Ph.D.
  • thesis, under the supervision of Brooks Otis, on Virgil. His research interests include Roman poetry and the history of classical studies in North America.
  • He is the editor, co-editor, and author of several standard works in his field.
