About Mike Freelander

  • Michael Randolph Freelander (born 23 April 1953) is an Australian Labor politician and former paediatrician.
  • He received an MBBS at the University of Sydney, and is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (Paediatrics).
  • He practiced as a paediatrician from 1978 to 2016, and became the federal member for Macarthur in the Australian House of Representatives after winning the seat at the 2016 federal election on July 2, defeating sitting Liberal member Russell Matheson.
  • Although an electoral boundary redistribution cut the Liberal margin from 11.1 to 3.3 points, he had incidentally won enough votes on the first count to win the seat outright. Freelander was the first Labor MP to hold the seat in 20 years since the Keating government lost the 1996 federal election, and only the third opposition MP in the seat's history.
  • He retained his seat at the 2019 Australian federal election. Freelander has served on the House of Representatives Standing committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport from 15 September 2016 and on the standing committee for Social Policy and Legal Affairs from 12 October 2016. He has six children and five grandchildren and worked as a paediatrician in his practice in Campbelltown.
