About Deborah Feldman

  • Deborah Feldman (born 17 August 1986) is an American-German writer currently living in Berlin, Germany.
  • She is known for her 2012 autobiography, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots. Feldman grew up as a member of the Hasidic Satmar group in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City.
  • She was raised by her grandparents, since her mother had left the group, and her mentally impaired father wasn't able to raise her on his own.
  • Her first language was Yiddish, and the use of English was frowned upon within the community.
  • Already as a child, Feldman was in conflict with the strict rules of her community.
  • She entered an arranged marriage at the age of 17, and became a mother at the age of 19.
  • In 2006, she moved with her husband out of Williamsburg, and began to study literature at the Sarah Lawrence College.
  • In 2009, she took her son, left her husband, and cut ties with the community.
