James Dennis Akumu (7 August 1934 – 15 August 2016) was a Kenyan trade unionist and politician who was the MP for Nyakach from 1969 to 1973, and from 1992 to 1997.Akumu was born in Central Nyanza and educated at the Onjiko Secondary School in Kisumu before attending Aggrey Memorial High School in Uganda.
He returned to Kenya to further his education at the Kenya Medical Training College in Nairobi from 1952–54, intending to become a doctor.
However, the Mau Mau Uprising forced him to drop out and take a job as a laboratory technician at a brewery instead.
Unhappy with how workers in Kenya were treated, he became active in the trade unions and eventually politics.After a decade-long struggle with kidney failure, he died at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, age 82.
