About Santiago Vidaurri

  • José Santiago Vidaurri Valdez (July 24, 1809 – 1867) was a controversial and powerful governor of the Mexican states of Nuevo León and Coahuila between 1855 and 1864.
  • He was an advocate of states' rights.
  • In 1861, he sought an association with the Confederate States of America, which benefited his region economically.
  • Earlier in 1855, he had been a supporter of the Revolution of Ayutla, which brought liberals to power.
  • Vidaurri supported Benito Juarez in the War of the Reform.
  • He later broke with Juarez and supported Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico.
  • When the French regime fell in 1867, Vidaurri was captured and executed for his alliance with the French.
