About Thomas Mitchell (Kent cricketer)

  • Thomas Frank Mitchell (22 October 1907 – 20 May 1960) was an English cricketer who played for Kent County Cricket Club between 1928 and 1934. Mitchell was born at Johannesburg in South Africa, the son of Frank Mitchell who had played Test cricket for both England and South Africa.
  • He was educated at Tonbridge School in Kent, being described in 1922 as a very young batsman of distinguished cricketing stock".
  • As a schoolboy he was described as having a "steadiness" when batting and a "pretty good" batsman who watched the ball well who bowled "quite well enough" to be considered al allrounder.He played for Lord's schools against The Rest in both 1924 and 1925, captaining Tonbridge in 1925, his final year at school, and first appeared for Kent's Second XI the same year.
  • Mitchell went on to make his Kent First XI debut in June 1928 in a match against Sussex at Tunbridge Wells.
  • He went on to play 24 times for the county, with his final match being in 1934.
  • He also played six times for MCC in first-class matches and played club cricket for Blackheath.Mitchell died at St John's Wood in London in 1960 aged 52.
