Duke Yamagata Aritomo (?? ??, 14 June 1838 – 1 February 1922), also known as Yamagata Kyosuke, was a Japanese field marshal, twice-elected Prime Minister of Japan, and one of the leaders of the Meiji oligarchy.
As the Imperial Japanese Army’s inaugural Chief of Staff, he was the main architect of the military foundation of early modern Japan.
For this reason, some historians consider Yamagata to be the “father” of Japanese militarism.
