Jenny Spangler (born July 20, 1963) is an American long-distance runner and US Olympian.
She competed in Atlanta, GA, in the women's marathon at the 1996 Summer Olympics, but did not complete the race due to a severe Achilles tendon injury.
By virtue of winning the 1996 US Women's Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:29:54, she was also the 1996 United States National Champion in the Marathon.
By finishing first on Feb.
10, 1996, at the Columbia, SC, US Women's Olympic Marathon trials, she qualified as the very first US Olympian for the 1996 team, male or female, in any sport.
She is still the US Junior National Champion running a best time of any US Junior in 1983, clocking 2:33:52 at Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN, at age 19.
In 1984 at the very first US Women's Olympic Marathon Trials in Olympia, WA, at age 20 she finished the Trials in 2:40:18, in Pittsburgh in 1988 2:44.59, and in 2004 in St.
Louis (100 year anniversary of the 1904 St.
Louis Olympics) in 2:36:30 for 9th place, at age 40.
In 2003 Jenny Spangler completed the Chicago Marathon in 2:32:39, setting a then US Master's National Record in the marathon, at age 40.
As a result, she is the only American runner to date, male or female, at any distance, to hold both the National Junior Record and the National Master's Record simultaneously.
