About Dante Thomas

  • Dante Thomas (born January 7, 1978) is an American R&B singer and musician, who experienced major international success in 2001 with his song, "Miss California". Dante Thomas is a retired American singer, songwriter, and novelist born in Sacramento California. Dante's career in Music started from a young age within a musical family, he grew up listening to artists like Steve Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway.
  • His voice had passion and sparks of soul touching friends and peers alike who encouraged Dante onward to be a recording artist. As a teen, Dante sang in funk bands and gospel choirs while humbly working in unhappy jobs to make ends meet.
  • However, his long term desires kept him motivated. That led to him packing his bags one day at age 18 and buying a one-way ticket to the Big Apple, New York City.
  • When asked why he didn’t buy a round-trip ticket just in case, he replied, “I was going to make it or be ruined.
  • In my mind there was no other alternative.” Dante’s first night in NYC had him sleeping on an emergency cot offered by a policeman in an empty hallway in the port-authority bus terminal, in midtown Manhattan.
  • Later the next day he found his way into a shelter for runaways and homeless teens, and this was how his true adventure to be a star began.
  • Having found a long term home in the Bronx and once settled there, Dante commenced to meet whoever he could. It was a little past his one year anniversary living in New York that he met the man who would help him on the road to success.
  • One night while on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn he was heard singing a song by Jodeci which prompted Donovan Thomas and Doug E Fresh much to their delight to exclaim, “That guy can sing!” Donovan who also had discovered artists like Beenie Man and Little Vicious immediately took Dante under his wings and got him his first apartment in Brooklyn.
  • The next 5 years onwards the two spent many nights recording songs and in the meantime connecting with the stars.
  • Dante toured with The Notorious BIG and the RnB sensation “Intro”, as well Kenny G-love Greene becoming his vocal mentor.
  • Dante also hung with others in famous studios like “Color Me Bad”, Mariah Carey, Chub Rock, Wyclef Juan and many others to name a few.
  • These experiences molded and also reminded him that his time would come if he worked hard enough for it.
  • Dante explains, “The truth is, most of the time the prize doesn’t come to the very best, but the most persistent.
  • Those who hold on the longest will usually come out the victor.” Finally, in the late summer of 2000 Dante met Pras Michel of the Fugees and this chance meeting in the famed Hit Factory had him later that same evening back recording what would become his official introduction to the world singing “Miss California”.
  • If one moment can change the fate of a person this was the moment Dante had been waiting for. Two weeks later Dante had a major record deal with Elektra.
  • Three weeks after that, he had completed his first album.
  • A month passed by and Johnny Wright came on to co-manage Dante and he was then slated to be an opening act for Nysnc in 2001.
  • Riding the wave of his worldwide smash “Miss California” the song launched Dante as a star into the Mainstream Pop and R&B market.
  • As the record sky rocketed to be one of Europe's biggest hits, it also landed Dante on America's top 100 Billboard charts and made him one of the most desirable recording artists at his peak. Dante not only toured with Nysnc but also toured with TLC, Nelly, 112, and Blackstreet to name a few and worked in the studio alongside Scott Storch, Snoop Dogg, Nick Carter, and AJ Mclean of The Backstreet Boys.
  • He sang songs written by Akon, Ne-Yo, and P!nk.
  • After all of this multiple amazing moments, around 2012 he secured a publishing deal with Warner Chappel music and made the choice to move to Germany.
  • Living in Europe opened countless doors which continued to fuel the fire of his writing and musical journey teaching Dante many valuable lessons that could have been learned no other way.
  • Dante has been able to enjoy the success of 2 gold records and one multi-platinum record which is his current crowning jewel of accomplishment, “Miss California” having sold more than 6 million copies worldwide so far.
