William Francis Kemmler (May 9, 1860 – August 6, 1890) of Buffalo, New York, a peddler and known alcoholic, was convicted of murdering Matilda "Tillie" Ziegler, his common-law wife.
He would become the first person in the world to be legally executed using an electric chair.
In spite of a successful prior test with a horse, the process did not go smoothly.
