About Vera Baird

  • Dame Vera Baird (née Thomas; born 13 February 1950) is a British politician, barrister, and academic.
  • She is currently serving as The Victims' Commissioner for England and Wales. She is currently a Visiting Professor of Legal Practice at Newcastle University, an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law at Northumbria University, and a Visiting Law Professor at London South Bank University.
  • She is an Honorary Fellow of St Hilda's College, Oxford and in November 2017 was appointed Honorary Fellow of Durham University Law School. She is Patron of Respect (a government funded, domestic abuse male perpetrator rehabilitation accreditation service) and Patron of Operation Encompass.
  • She is the only woman honorary member of the Durham Miners Association. She was the Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Redcar from 2001 to 2010, was a UK Government Minister from 2006 to 2010, and the UK Government's Solicitor General for England and Wales from 2007 to 2010.
  • Dame Vera served as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria from November 2012 to June 2019. Baird has written several books concerning rape and women's experiences in court and a book on women murderers.
  • Baird was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to women and equality.
