About Henry Charlwood

  • Henry Rupert James Charlwood (19 December 1846 in Horsham, Sussex – 6 June 1888 in Scarborough, Yorkshire) played cricket professionally for England in the first two Test matches ever played, which were against Australia in 1877.
  • Charlwood was a top order batsman and occasional lob bowler. Henry Charlwood, or Harry, toured with James Lillywhite, junior' team on the first ever cricket tour of Australia that included test matches.
  • Note: The 2 tests were designated test matches sometime after they had been played.
  • Australia won the toss for the 1st Test and elected to bat so Harry fielded for a day and a half as Australia put on 245 runs for 9 wickets.
  • He batted at No: 3 and joined Harry Jupp (16 not out) when England were 23 for 1.
  • He and Harry Jupp put on 56 runs for the 2nd wicket.
  • England's first ever 50 partnership.
  • Harry made 36 which was the 3rd best Innings of the match.
  • He added a further 13 in the 2nd Innings, just missing out on becoming the 3rd test Batsman to score 50 runs in a career and match.
