About Ōyama Sutematsu

  • Princess Oyama Sutematsu (?? ??, born Yamakawa Sakiko (?? ??), later Yamakawa Sutematsu (?? ??); February 24, 1860 – February 18, 1919) was a Japanese woman of the Meiji era.
  • As a child, she survived the Battle of Aizu.
  • She was then sent to America for ten years as part of the Iwakura Mission.
  • She was the first Japanese woman to receive a college degree, and spent her later years advocating for women's education and volunteer nursing in Japan.
