About Armas-Eino Martola

  • Armas-Eino Martola (12 May 1896 – 5 February 1986) was a Finnish general. Armas-Eino Martola was born in Raahe, and started his military career in 1915, when he joined the Jäger Movement.
  • He fought in the Finnish Civil War as a platoon commander on the side of the Whites.
  • 1919-1921 he studied at the École Militaire in Paris and was military attachĂ© in France between 1928-1931.
  • He then returned to Finland and held the post of chief of staff for the White Guard.
  • He held the position of Division commander during both the Winter War and the Continuation War.
  • In 1944 he was appointed deputy foreign minister and between 1944 and 1946 he served as county governor of Uusimaa Province.
  • He later held high positions in the United Nations as military adviser to Dag Hammarskjöld (1956-1958) and as commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (1966-1970).
  • He also pursued a civilian career in the paper industry.
  • He died in Helsinki, aged 90.
