  • Representative from Illinois. Murphy attended Chicago parochial schools.
  • He received a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University in 1955 and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

  • He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955–1957, including a one-year tour of duty in the Far East.
