About François Abraha

  • François Abraha (2 April 1918 – 26 March 2000) was appointed by Pope John XXIII in 1961 as the first autonomous Bishop of Asmara, which at that time was a part of the Ethiopian Catholic Church.
  • He went on to attend the sessions of the Second Vatican Council. François Abraha was known for his ecumenical openness and for his activism against the Derg in Ethiopia.
  • He repeatedly protested against Soviet involvement in the Eritrean struggle for independence.
