About Bernie Clifton

  • Bernie Clifton (born Bernard Quinn; April 1936) is a British comedian and entertainer.
  • Born in St Helens, Lancashire, England, he began his teenage career singing with a dance band before working the pubs and clubs, doing shows in Blackpool and then progressing on to television appearing on the BBC's Crackerjack series with Ed Stewart, Peter Glaze, Don Maclean and Jan Hunt in the 1970s.
  • He lives in Barlow, Derbyshire. In 2005 he appeared in Comic Relief's all-star music video for Peter Kay and Tony Christie's chart-topping re-release of "(Is This the Way to) Amarillo".
  • Clifton was joined in this video by his long term comedy partner Oswald the Ostrich, which Clifton famously rode on stage, in a haphazard manner. At the age of 70, Clifton made his debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Comedy Festival in 2006.
  • This one off show brought his zany variety style of comedy to a modern stand-up format, which was well received by reviewers. The professional dancer Kevin Clifton is the nephew of the comedian, and enjoyed Oswald the Ostrich appearing unannounced at his birthday parties as a child.
