About Andrew H. Longino

  • Andrew Houston Longino (May 16, 1854 – February 24, 1942) was a Mississippi politician who served as a Democrat in the State Senate (1880–1884), the U.S.
  • District Attorney's (1888–1890), and Governor's offices (1900–1904). He was born in Lawrence County, Mississippi.
  • He attained education at Mississippi College, where he graduated in 1875, and at the University of Virginia, where he earned a law degree in 1880. During his term as governor, Longino began a campaign to attract new industry to the state and supervised the design and building of a new state capitol still in use today.
  • Also of note, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History was created and a new penitentiary at Parchman Farm was constructed during his administration.It was Governor Longino who invited president Theodore Roosevelt to a bear hunt in the Mississippi Delta, which became later famous for coining the term teddy bear.Longino died at age 87 and was interred at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Jackson, Mississippi.
