Joseph Maxwell Cleland (born August 24, 1942) is an American politician from the state of Georgia.
Cleland, a Democrat, is a disabled US Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a recipient of the Silver Star and the Bronze Star for valorous actions in combat, and a former United States Senator.
He has also served as Administrator of Veterans Affairs (now a Cabinet-level position).
From 2003 to 2007, he served on the Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, a presidentially-appointed position.
From 2009 to 2017, he served as Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission.
Since he left office in 2003, no other Democrat from Georgia has served a full term in the United States Senate.
