  • To be distinguished from his uncle Arnold Mendelssohn (1817–1850), elder son of Moses Mendelssohn's youngest son Nathan (1781–1852).

He was born in Ratibor, Province of Silesia, son of Felix Mendelssohn's cousin Wilhelm Mendelssohn (1821–1866) who had married in 1854 Louise Aimee Cauer (sister to Bertha Cauer).
