About Fred Slater

  • Frederick Benjamin Slater (25 September 1925 – September 2002) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Birmingham City and York City.Slater was born in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire.
  • Described as a "rough and tumble striker", he had been playing for Burton Albion when Birmingham City signed him on professional forms in November 1947.
  • He made his debut in the First Division a year later, deputising for Cyril Trigg in a home game against Huddersfield Town on 13 November 1948.
  • Ten minutes into the game, Slater broke his leg.
  • He missed only four months of the season, but by the time he was fit again to play, Jimmy Dailey had taken over at centre forward.
  • Slater played four more first-team games for Birmingham before joining York City at the end of the 1950–51 season.
  • He scored three goals from 13 games in the Third Division North, and then dropped into non-league football, first with Corby Town and then with Nuneaton Borough.
