About Vincent Gerard (bishop)

  • George Vincent Gerard, (24 November 1898 – 14 January 1984) was the seventh Anglican Bishop of Waiapu, serving from 1938 to 1944. Gerard was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch and Brasenose College, Oxford.
  • After fighting with the Buffs in the First World War, he was ordained in 1923 and embarked on his ecclesiastical career with a curacy in Timaru.
  • Later he was Vicar of Pahiatua then Petone and finally (before his appointment to the episcopate) of St Matthew, Auckland.
  • During the Second World War he was a prisoner of war at Vincigliata in Italy.
  • After resigning his See he was Rural Dean of Rotherham and an assistant bishop in the Diocese of Sheffield until his retirement in 1960.
