About George Sherwood (Canadian politician)

  • George Sherwood (May 29, 1811 – ??) was a judge and political figure in Canada West. He was born in Augusta Township in 1811, the son of Levius Peters Sherwood.
  • He studied law, was called to the bar in 1833 and set up practice in Prescott.
  • He was named Queen's Counsel in 1856.
  • He represented Brockville in the 1st Parliament of the Province of Canada and served until 1851; he was reelected in 1857 and served until 1863.
  • He served on the Board of Railway Commissioners (later known as the Canadian Transport Commission) and as Receiver General from 1858 to 1862, when he became Commissioner of Crown Lands.
  • In 1865, he was appointed judge of the court for Hastings County.
