Abdolrasool Vatandoust Haghighi (Persian: ????????? ???????? ??????) was born in Isfahan, Iran, on July 17, 1947.
Being originally from Shiraz, he lived in Tehran from his childhood.
His father, Mahmood Vatandoust Haghighi, was amongst well-known master craftsmen in the art of khatamkari (Inlaid work) who worked in khatamkari workshop of the Ministry of Cultural Art and later the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
Vatandoust completed his high school (Oloom High School, Tehran) in 1965 and on the same year and after passing successfully the universities entrance examination was admitted, based on his much interest in fundamental sciences and in particular chemistry, to the Faculty of Science, University of Tehran.
After receiving his BSc degree in Chemistry in 1969 and completing his mandatory military service he joined the then Archaeological Centre of Iran to help, with collaboration of others, with establishing the first conservation and restoration laboratory there.
Months later he travelled to India to attend a training course in the conservation and restoration of museum objects held in the conservation laboratory, National Museum, New Delhi, under the supervision of O.
P.
Agrawal, who was then the head of the conservation laboratory in the museum.
As he was very much attached to historical properties and their protection he then went to London to continue his studies in the London University where he concluded his post-graduate studies by receiving his PhD degree in the field of conservation and scientific research in historic materials in 1978.
