- Konovalov defeated United Russia nominee and incumbent Head of Republic Viktor Zimin in the first round on 9 September 2018, and won the uncontested second round on 11 November.
- Konovalov became the first head of the federal subject of Russia, elected on an uncontested elections since 1997.Konovalov is the youngest Head of Khakassia, as he took the post at age 30.
