About Peter Fjellstedt

  • Peter Fjellstedt (1802–1881) was a Swedish missionary.
  • He was born in Värmland, Sweden in 1802.
  • He trained for Christian ministry at Lund University and was ordained in 1828.
  • Fjellstedt then undertook further missionary training with Basel Mission.
  • In 1832, he was sent to Palayamkottai in Tamil Nadu, India, for his first missionary assignment.
  • After three years, he returned home due to poor health.
  • He went on a further assignment to Turkey and Malta, but left the mission field again in 1840.From 1843, Fjellstedt was based in Sweden, where he was involved in teaching, writing and training.
  • In 1845, he contributed to the establishment of the Lund Missionary Society, and he later founded a mission training school in Uppsala, which was renamed the Fjellstedtka School in 1862.
  • He also wrote devotional books and Bible commentaries.
  • Fjellstedt was awarded an honorary doctorate of theology by the University of Halle in 1853.
  • He died in Uppsala in 1881.
