  • While serving as the Chief Bugler of the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry/44th Pennsylvania Volunteers as part of the Union Army, he captured the enemy flag during the Battle of Amelia Springs at Paines Crossroads, Virginia on April 5, 1865.
