About Jocelyn Devas

  • Jocelyn Devas (died 1886) was the founder of the Devas Club in 1884, a charitable club for young working men in Battersea, south London, England, originally in a room over a coffee shop in Stewarts Road.Devas was a student at University College, Oxford, matriculating in 1878.
  • The Devas Club was originally called University College House and the Devas Club has maintained its links with the college over the years. Devas was killed in 1886 in a climbing accident while trying to ascend the Matterhorn in France.
  • His father continued supporting the club after his death and there are still family links today.
