- McDonnell played 50 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks.
- McDonnell is currently the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Dallas Stars.
- He was formerly the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Detroit Red Wings.
