About John Arthur Hughes

  • John Arthur Hughes (November 2, 1880 – May 25, 1942) was an officer in the United States Marine Corps and a Medal of Honor recipient for his role in the United States occupation of Veracruz. Hughes joined the Marine Corps in March 1900, and was commissioned as an officer in December 1901.
  • As the result of a gas attack during the Battle of Saint-Mihiel, he was medically retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in July 1919.Hughes died on May 25, 1942 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
  • His grave can be found in section 8, lot 5265.
