- He served as the seventh head football coach for the Colgate University and he held that position for the 1899 season.

- Before coaching, Stannard played football first at Colgate under Spencer Ford and then at Pennsylvania under George Washington Woodruff.Stannard also served as the head football coach at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania in 1897, leading the team to a 1–7–2 record.
