- Senewiratne was a MP for Mahiyangana electorate and former Cabinet Minister of Labour in the government of J.R.
- Jayewardene.Lakshman was elected to parliament in the seat of Mahiyangana at a by-election on 18 April 1985, following the death of the sitting member, Lakshman’s father, in December 1984.
- At the 1989 Sri Lankan parliamentary elections he was elected as the member for Badulla and has continuously represented the seat for thirty two years.
