About Larry E. Smith

  • Larry Edward Smith, (born 27 October 1945) is a Canadian musician, composer, recording artist, and computer programming expert.
  • He studied Engineering Science at the University of Toronto where he graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree specializing in Aerospace Engineering.
  • In 1970 the 24-year-old Smith decided he preferred music to engineering and joined the Canadian rock band Lighthouse, a rock group that sold millions of records and earned three Juno Awards as one of Canada’s leading pop bands.
  • Smith composed, arranged and sang Old Man from the One Fine Morning gold album, as well as composing and co-composing various other songs for the group.
  • Starting out on valve trombone with Lighthouse, he later moved to trumpet, and then to keyboards when Paul Hoffert left the band.
  • Smith also sang backup vocals on most of the recordings. For some recent solo recordings see In 1984, Smith moved to Israel, where he started a computer software company, specializing in automatic language translation.
