About Paul H. Carr

  • Paul Henry Carr (13 February 1924 - 25 October 1944) was a U.S.
  • Navy Gunner's Mate Third Class who received a Silver Star posthumously for his actions aboard USS Samuel B.
  • Roberts (DE 413) at the Battle off Samar during World War II.
  • Carr served as the gun mount captain of the Roberts aft 5-inch gun.
  • In the ship's final action, Carr led his gunmount team to fire 324 rounds in 35 minutes.
  • As he was dying, he was found at his station gripping the last unfired round.
  • He was buried at sea; his name is on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery.The United States Navy named the guided missile frigate USS Carr (FFG-52) for him.
  • In 2018, Carr was inducted into the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame.Carr came from Checotah, Oklahoma.
  • He married Goldie Lee Jamison of Checotah on 23 October 1943, leaving her a widow a year and two days later.
