  • He was Secretary of the Perth Trades Hall Council 1939-1943.
  • In 1943, he was elected to the Australian Senate as a Labor Senator for Western Australia.
  • He remained in the Senate until his death in 1951, necessitating the appointment of Joe Cooke to fill the vacancy.
