About Franz Magnis-Suseno

  • Franz Magnis Suseno, , or Maria Franz Anton Valerian Benedictus Ferdinand von Magnis und Strassnitz (born May 26, 1936) is a Jesuit priest of Indonesia.
  • He was born in Bozków, Lower Silesia, and was originally called Count von Magnis before becoming a Jesuit in 1967.
  • He studied Marxism to combat it as an enemy of the faith.
  • He settled in Indonesia in 1961 and became an Indonesian citizen in 1977 adding the name "Suseno" to his own.
  • Although anti-communist he is concerned with social justice and issues about how "The rich get richer, while the poor get poorer." He heads the Driyarkara School of Philosophy and is a noted social and political analyst in his nation.
  • In Indonesia he is often called Romo, or Father Magnis.
  • In 2007 he turned down the Bakrie Award because of a Sidoarjo mud flow.
  • He received a Habibie award for interfaith dialogue and in 2015 he received the Mahaputera award.
